John Taylor Park Incubator Garden
Lawrence, Kansas

An interest in locally grown, sustainable agriculture led to the formation of the Food Policy Council, a partnership with the City of Lawrence and Douglas County. The council identified a number of city/county owned sites that would make good locations for either community gardens or small scale farming operations. The John Taylor Park Incubator Garden is located on one of these properties. Part of the garden will feature a children’s section with sensory, rainbow, and food gardens, as well as a maze, table and seating. Another portion of the garden will be managed as a collective garden available for the general public. Produce from this area will be regularly harvested for used in a local food pantry. Annual fees will be used to help cover expenses and to encourage engagement from the participants.

The garden requested funds from the Kansas Community Garden Grant project for site preparation, to build beds and fencing, and to purchase irrigation supplies, tools and gardening equipment.
