Planting Peace in the Community Garden
Wichita, KS
Planting Peace in the Community Garden is an outreach of the Safe Streets programs in Wichita. The goal of Safe Streets is to reduce gang violence, unify and strengthen neighborhoods, leverage social services, encourage economic development, build pride in the neighborhood, and create positive learning experiences for young people. The Planting Peace garden has partnered with St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Sedgwick County Extension Office. The church offered a 95’ x 58’ fenced lot for the garden site. Twenty 10’ x 10’ plots are available for rent to neighbors, parish members, Safe Streets staff and community police officers. In addition to plot fees that help defray expenses, donations of materials and labor have been secured for trees removal, tilling, plumbing installation, electrical work, etc.
Kansas Community Garden Grant funds will be used for a shed, tools, a composting area and to build a kids education corner.
