Sand Creek Community Garden
North Newton, KS
The goals for the Sand Creek Community Garden are to nurture healthy bodies with locally grown, nutritious food; help stretch family food budgets; encourage exercise; foster community through inter-generational interaction; and educate people in good gardening practices. The garden is a collaborative effort of Bethel College, Bethel College Mennonite Church and the City of North Newton. Gardeners of all ages and nationalities are involved in this allotment gardens, including college students, children from a Sunday School class, and a case worker who gardens with the children he works with from Prairie View Mental Health Center.
Recently the garden learned that they must move to a new location. Funds from the Kansas Community Garden Grant will allow the garden to install irrigation, signage and fencing at the new location. Additional grant funds will also be used to purchase a mower, chipper/shredder, watering equipment and garden tools.
