Son Shine Community Garden
Clay Center, KS

SonShine Community Garden in Clay Center was established to provide an opportunity for more
residents to grow their own food, serve as a meeting place for the community, encourage multigenerational
interaction through gardening, provide healthy activity for the participants, and provide
excess produce to those in need. Gardens have a choice of renting a 6’ x 20’ or a 6’ x 40’ plot. Plot fees
help purchase equipment and maintain the garden. Additional funding has come from the Evangelical
Covenant Church and a fund-raising lunch.

Kansas Community Garden Grant funds will be used to purchase a tiller, mower and a picnic table. Funds
will also be used to purchase materials to build a handicapped accessible garden area; a shade structure
for the commons area; and a children’s garden area. The group will also use grant money to improve the
paths and aisles within the garden.
