Unity Garden
Stilwell, KS

While the median household income of Johnson County is $72,000 per year, recent economic downturns have led to an increased number of residents who are reaching out to public benefit programs in order to meet their basic needs. To meet this challenge the Unity Church of Overland Park has initiated a long-term program to assist undernourished children and families in the Johnson County area. The church has established a communal garden that will produce a variety of vegetables including potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, lettuces and herbs that will be used at the Y Kids food and Fun program at Stilwell Elementary School. As part of this summer food program at lease 35-40 elementary aged children will receive two healthy, nutritious meals a day while school is out of session.

Funds from the Kansas Community Garden Grant will be used for irrigation supplies and a vegetable processing station. Since the garden will also be used as a teaching venue for the children served through the program, funds will also be used to purchase an 18’ x 30’ canopy that will provide a shaded space for programming.
